Cleveland, OH, May 3, 2007-- A Liberian economist residing in the United States is calling on the government of Liberia and other key decision makers to pass a historical law that will comprehensively establish national developmental benchmarks that will serve as a blueprint against which all current and future national developmental policies will be based to ensure continuity in Liberia’s national development policy from one administration to the next in a consistent manner to ensure the speedy and systematic development of the country.

I learned today (May 1, 2007 from the LiberianForum website), with shock, deep sorrow and regret, the sad news of the passing of THE VENERABLE CHARLES H. WILLIAMS of Grand Bassa County.
I got to know "Charlie"(as he was called by us, his friends and admirers)Williams personally for the first time when he was serving as Superintendent of Nimba County in the City of Saniquellie, during the 1960s.

The staff of LiberianForum and DOVAfrica mourn the passing of Honorable Charles Horatio Williams.
Honorable Williams served as an Ambassador; and also as a Senator of Grand Bassa County, Liberia.
He was a statesman extraordinaire. When he served as superintendent, Hon. Williams built much needed facilities and earned wide recognition for his work on improving the lives of so many.

A national malaria policy to address the control of this disease has
been in place since most of you were born and Liberia has been making
progress in its campaign to control malaria, but it seems that our
policymakers need to sit down and begin to derive a new direction to
fight this killer disease. We cannot afford to lose such
valuable resources in our fight to combat this disease which is
decimating the future leaders of Liberia and mother Africa.

It is well approaching a year now since President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf packed and left the Executive Mansion on Capitol Hill. The president moved her office and staff and the Ministry of State for President Affairs from the Executive Mansion and relocated at the neighboring Ministry of Foreign Affairs building just a few block away, following the fire incidence on the fourth floor of the Mansion on July 26, 2006. The fire incidence has since been investigated and the findings proved no foul play, but merely technical fault.

The victims of global conflicts are sometimes forgotten, particularly when they have resettled thousands of miles from home.
But the Liberian Truth and Reconciliation Commission wants to make sure the victims of that country's civil war are heard. The commission is taking statements from Liberians who were displaced during the 14-year war and previous periods of unrest and are now living elsewhere, including Georgia.

With the exception of the Holocaust and Rwanda, the story of Darfur (Land of the Fur) is like no other in recent memory. The unmitigated horror of the human tragedy unfolding there is a moral indictment against the Sudanese Government – one of the most despicable governments in the world today. This pathetic story, like that of Rwanda, is so horrible that the United States classifies it as a “genocide.”

Flashback: And there was Samuel Doe, sporting his afro, the preferred hair style of the day smartly dressed in his military regalia. It was high noon in Liberia! Microphones and mini tape recorders flooded his first press conference; photo journalists scrambled, jostling for positions to take a snap at the man who had just made history.

In March 2007, a severe tropical storm raked and disrupted normal life for the people of Ganta in Northern Liberia. The storm left scores of people severely injured, and destroyed close to 200 residential homes, offices, schools, and a hospital building. Indeed, the people of Ganta definitely deserve special care and attention for this great misfortune.

Coups and sudden military takeover in Africa were common occurrences in the late 70s and early 80s. When I was a student in Senior High School, we often heard about military coups on the continent. The media immediately captured and published such events. On television and radio, and in the newspapers journalists and political analysts described in details how certain governments had been destabilize as a result.
