Tribute to the Late Honorable Thomas V. Hanson Chairman, Special Monitoring Committee Liberians United for National Reforms
I pay this tribute on behalf of Liberians United for National Reforms
(LUNAR), of which I am President and Governor Hanson was Chairman of
the Board.
We join the family and you the Governor’s friends not to bid him farewell but instead to celebrate his life, a well-lived life that touched so many people, Liberians and non-Liberians alike.
About three years ago, when a group of us was in search of an alternative approach to address the reform needs of Liberia, Governor Hanson was one of the elders we turned to for direction.
Out of those consultative efforts which were guided by Governor’s wise counsel, an Organization was borne called Liberians United for National Reforms. The Group would later ask the Governor to be Vice Chairman its Board of Directors.
In helping to get the group to a good start, Governor Hanson initially served on the Constitution Committee for LUNAR and became Vice Chairman of the group‘s Board of Directors. Earlier this year he was asked to fill the position of Chairman after the passing of the Chairman, Dr. Eric Neufville.
But, many of us in LUNAR knew the Governor much longer than these past few years that we worked together in LUNAR. For many of us, the Governor was a mentor, a father-figure, a dear friend and one to whom we often turned for counsel. He was never too busy to lend a listening ear and a compassionate heart. Despite his many accomplishments and stature, he considered no one too small or insignificant for his attention. He exemplified a truly genuine spirit of a humble man.
As many of the tributes that have been published since the Governor’s passing have shown, he rose from a humble beginning to serve our country in some of the most important positions in our national government. In all the positions he served, whether as managing director of a public corporation, cabinet minister, or Governor of the country’s National Bank, he was motivated by a sincere desire to serve.
